From Church Solos to Silence

When I lost my voice… my spirit learned to speak in new ways *
A single photograph can hold laughter, warmth, belonging, yet, also whispers of a private battle no one else can see.
July 2019 - the opening of a vibrant Nigerian bar and grill. The room was alive with laughter echoing through the space. The aroma of rich, spiced, delicious dishes permeated the air and seeped through all your senses. Music danced between conversations and karaoke filled the room with bold, joyful voices. I was there—part of the media support team, present in every way, yet quietly aware that something was slipping away from me.
The Night I Couldn’t Sing
Writing, music and nature photography has long been my passions. From church solos to karaoke nights, the act of singing was a core part of my self-expression. It has been one of the purest expressions of my joy. That night, I watched silently. I felt the familiar pull toward the microphone, that spark; that urge; that calling.
However, I could not answer it. My voice was leaving me, not dramatically, not all at once, but enough that I knew something was going very wrong. Soon thereafter, my voice was almost entirely gone. It was more than a physical loss; it felt like a core part of my BE-ing, my purpose was slowly being stripped away.
When Silence Becomes Your Teacher
For someone whose life is rooted in communication - in words, in expression, in connection - this particular silence was disorienting, frightening. This forced silence, however, became one of my greatest teachers. I was compelled to ask deep, uncomfortable questions:
What’s happening to me? Will my voice ever return? Who will I BE, if I cannot express myself the way I once did? Deeper still, rose the questions: “God, what are the lessons that are here for me? What are You trying to show me? What do You need my attention on or about?”
Then, unexpectedly, the world slowed down.
The Unexpected Covering and the Turning Inward
When something external is taken away, you are gently—sometimes forcefully—invited inward.
Shortly after, the world entered the season we now all remember, the time of COVID-19 pandemic. We were all asked to be still, to retreat, to stay inside. People were forced to disconnect from the noise of the outside world. In a way, this global pause became a quiet covering for my personal one. My silence, my failing voice was no longer something I had to attempt to explain. It simply became something that was, that is. In this space, I leaned inward in an even deeper way.
- Deeper Meditation and Prayer: Shifting from asking "how" to listening for "what's next."
- Exploring New Modalities: I delved deeper into herbal remedies and holistic practices, taking greater ownership of my well-being.
- Learning to Listen Even More: With my own voice quieted, I began to hear the world, and my own intuition, even more clearly, more vibrantly.
The Return…Different, But Sacred
My voice did eventually return. For that, I am deeply and eternally grateful, even though it is not the same as it was before. Sometimes it wavers, sometimes it surprises me. Yet, it is here, and I no longer take it for granted.
The experience taught me that our true ‘voice’ is not merely the sound we produce. Your authentic voice is:
- Your Presence: Showing up fully, even when you don't have all the answers.
- Your Resilience: The power to persevere even when your ‘notes do not land as they once did.’
- Your Ability to Listen: Creating space for others to be heard is powerful.
Your story too is made of such moments.
It is Energy. It is Spirit. It is Truth expressed through BE-ing.
I learned to:
- Cherish every word
- Honour every connection
- Listen more deeply than ever before
Not perfectly… but intentionally.
I learned to amplify other voices—clients, guests, stories that needed to be told—with a new level of empathy and purpose. I realized that my mission wasn't just to use my voice, but to help others recognize that their voice matters, that their story matters.
This journey is at the very heart of why I am doing what I do. On the Speak to Hope podcast, we will explore stories of resilience, reinvention, and finding your authentic message. We’ll dive into the moments that challenge us and how they ultimately shape the unique value we bring to the world—whether in family, business, creativity, or life, and we’ll explore topics of spirituality and the inner journey of healing.
My season of silence reminded me that every voice has a purpose. If you're feeling silenced, struggling to find your message, or navigating your own unexpected challenge, know this: you are not alone. Your current season might just be preparing you to speak with more power and purpose than you ever thought possible.
A New Definition of Strength
Resilience is not always loud. Sometimes it looks like:
- Showing up quietly
- Speaking softly where you once roared
- Continuing, even when things don’t feel the same.
It is choosing gratitude over grief, presence over fear, faith over certainty.
A Gentle Reminder for You
There are moments in life that do not break you…they redefine you. If you are in a season where something you once relied on feels distant or gone…
Pause, Breathe, Listen.
Ponder: What within you is waiting to be heard, to be birthed. There may be something sacred unfolding within you...ready, perhaps, to rise.
Final Reflections
Some experiences do not leave us. They stay…not as wounds, but as quiet reminders of who we became in the process.
Today, I hold my voice differently…with reverence, with gratitude, with purpose.
I offer this to you: Your voice matters. Your story matters. You matter.
Every voice, even broken ones matter.
What began as the fading of my voice became the awakening of how my spirit was always meant to speak.
There are moments in life that look ordinary from the outside, yet carry entire worlds within them.
